This project was commissioned by the Village of Bridgeview and PACE Suburban Bus to design a new bus station at Toyota Park. This $2 Million project facility contained an outdoor waiting area alongside native flora, an enclosed area heated for colder months, and a utility area with driver’s restroom. As the station is likely to become a hub for the PACE bus systems in the southwest suburbs, the desire was for this bus station to be a capstone piece for the area. A key design feature of this bus station was the intricate lighting system which covered about 15% of the entire construction budget. The perimeter façade was covered with polycarbonate panels all around for red cold-cathode lighting, while the ceiling below was fully covered with white cold-cathode lighting. The lighting was also optionally controlled to synch in desired patterns for bus arrivals, Chicago Fire games, concerts, and more. This design—sought to balance an advanced aesthetic appeal along with energy effectiveness and reduced maintenance—was a complicated effort that brought in the support of architects, interior designers, electrical engineers, and product vendors to bring the design to fruition.
